When Juno Developments and Elcock Associates sought an external envelope solution for their redevelopment of the Old Police Station in Sandbanks, Dorset, Catnic’s SSR2 system met all the necessary criteria. The pre-finished steel standing seam roof and cladding provided an eco-friendly, durable, and sustainable solution, whilst remaining faithful to the aesthetics of the building.

Renamed The Metropolitan, the redevelopment consists of 52 luxury flats built within the existing façade of the former Dorset Police headquarters. Initially built in 1935, permission was granted to expand the building with the addition of an extra storey.

Catnic was involved from the outset of the project, working closely with the developer, architect and Aloft Ltd; the contractor hired to deliver the roof and cladding system.

Although zinc had initially been proposed for the project, Catnic’s SSR2 was eventually specified as a cost-effective alternative, whilst still delivering the aesthetic qualities required.

With BBA Certification, and having been designed to last in excess of 40 years, SSR2’s extended maintenance cycle and low Life Cycle Cost also satisfied the environmental requirements for this residential development.

In addition to this, as dormer windows were incorporated into the overall design, the integrated eyelet hole fixing strip allowed for easy installation and meant that any potential challenges in delivering the roofing system were easily overcome.

Iain Prince, at Catnic commented, “We were contacted very early on in the process by Elcock Associates to discuss the suitability of SSR2 for the project. It was felt that with the additional challenge of dormer windows, SSR2 would simplify the installation process due to its light weight and flexibility, whilst still being able to provide the desired aesthetic result.”
