FAQs about builders’ metalwork

Builders’ metalwork covers a wide range of components used to connect, support, restrain and reinforce timber and masonry structures. Typical applications include joist support, roof truss restraint, timber to timber connection, timber to masonry connection, and general structural bracing.

At Catnic, we have a vast array of metalwork products. These can be grouped broadly as:
•    Joist hangers – timber-to-timber and timber-to-masonry support.
•    Restraint straps – horizontal or vertical tying of timber to masonry.
•    Angle brackets and plates – 90° reinforcement for timber or masonry.
•    Plate connectors – multi-purpose timber connectors and framing anchors.
•    Truss clips – fixing trussed rafters to wall plates
•    Builders’ bands/multi fix strapping & wall connectors - general bracing and fixing.

Most metalwork is manufactured from galvanised steel, providing corrosion resistance suitable for typical building applications. Some components may also be available in stainless steel for high corrosion or coastal applications.

Depending on the product type, metalwork may fall under:
•    EN 845 1 — masonry ancillary components (e.g., restraint straps and joist hangers)
•    EN 14545 — timber connectors
Products covered in BS EN845-1 and BS EN 14545 are UKCA and CE marked. All Catnic metalwork products made of galvanised steel are manufactured to BS EN 10346.

Selection depends on:
•    Application requirements (joist hanger, restraint strap, angle bracket, etc.)
•    Load requirements (light, medium, or heavy duty)
•    Connection type (timber to timber or timber to masonry)
•    Joist width and depth
•    Orientation (horizontal or vertical restraint)
•    Environmental conditions (standard galvanised vs stainless steel - Always check the duty rating and installation guidance)

Fixings vary by product type, but commonly include:
•    Sheradised square twist nails
•    Galvanised nails
•    Woodscrews
•    Bolts or coach screws

Catnic metalwork products should not be modified unless the manufacturer's guidance explicitly allows it.

Galvanised steel is suitable for internal use, but stainless steel is recommended for coastal, high salt, or chemically treated timber applications.

General best practice includes:
•    Following load and duty ratings
•    Ensuring correct bearing lengths for joist hangers
•    Maintaining correct spacing and alignment
•    Using all required fixings in pre punched holes
•    Avoiding site modifications unless permitted
•    Always refer to installation guidance for the specific component type.

Most merchants stock core items such as joist hangers, restraint straps, brackets, and builders band. Specialist connectors or heavy duty components may be available via special order.
