If you have a structural opening or need to support a masonry load, Catnic lintels can help.

Today’s building standards require far larger cavities to ensure homes have appropriately insulated walls.  50mm cavity wall lintels are therefore predominantly used for mid-century builds constructed before modern legislation came into force - with compulsory insulated cavity walls and the thickness of insulation gradually increasing every few years.

Duplex corrosion protection gives Catnic lintels lasting durability in service. Therefore, once a lintel is installed, maintenance is not required. However, appropriate pre-installation checks must be carried out.

Check the lintel for damage prior to fitting, and confirm the cavity is free of debris. Prepare the opening by inspecting for signs of damp, repointing mortar as required and verifying that insulation sits in the correct position.

Make sure to:
•    Confirm insulation has not bridged the cavity.
•    Verify the residual cavity is clear of obstruction.
•    Check DPC trays and stop ends have been installed correctly.

Both 50mm and 100mm cavity wall lintels look very similar, the latter having the cavity section noticeably wider. Both ranges have the same structural performance, same durability and are equally easy to install.

Video Guides

When selecting a lintel, there are three factors that should be considered to ensure the correct specification: the type of wall construction, the dimensions of the structural opening and the total load on the lintel. In this video, we run you through the lintel selection process.

Catnic thermally broken lintel installation

Once you have chosen the correct lintel for your project, it is crucial that the lintel be installed properly – if it is not, it could lead to serious issues for the building. In this video, we explain the installation considerations for cavity wall lintels.

Steel lintels, and specifically Catnic's thermally broken lintels, have a significant role to play in reducing thermal bridging and achieving carbon gains. They represent one of the simplest and most economical ways for building fabric to be designed and constructed to help achieve the carbon gains necessary to meet current and future building regulations.
