There are many types of lintels on the market. And, from their materials to shape and height, lintels are available in a wide variety of configurations to make them better suited for different jobs.
Whether you’re just learning about lintels for future reference, or if you’re stuck in the process of choosing between composite and combined lintels, keep reading as we unpack the key differences between these two common types of lintel.
What is a composite lintel?
Composite lintels, like most composite products, are made via a mixture of two or more different types of material – one prefabricated, and one additional material. The additional material is often composed of masonry or concrete which, when combined, act together to create a structurally sound product with materials that cancel out the downsides of each other.
How are composite lintels made?
Catnic composite lintels are made of galvanised steel profiles which then are additionally powder coated to provide additional corrosion protection and an aesthetic finish. Composite lintels are manufactured and tested to the requirements of British and European Standards.
What is a combined lintel?
On the other hand, combined lintels are effectively two structural elements that act together.
Combined lintel consists of two or more structural elements each one acting with compression and tension zones.
Combined vs composite lintels
While combined and composite materials are similar in the sense that they utilise two different materials, they do have their differences. Both kinds work, but since Catnic manufactures composite lintels, we will focus on the latter.
Advantages of composite lintels
Use within heavier loads
By merging two materials to work together, lintels themselves can maintain lower weight while achieving substantial load capacity due to composite action of steel component and masonry.
Combined material usage
Composite lintels are designed to maximise the effectiveness of two materials, playing to each material’s strengths. This results in a structurally sound, efficient product.
Flexibility
Composite lintels are a flexible solution as there are various ranges dedicated different wall constructions and loading demands.
For example, composite cavity wall lintels come as standard, heavy and extra heavy duty for wall construction ranging from 50 mm to 205 mm cavity size.
