Architect Utilises Catnic Urban Roofing and Cladding for Coastal House Extension
A mid-1960s detached house situated on the scenic Gower coastline has undergone a significant renovation. The transformation highlights the architect’s signature style with Catnic Urban steel standing seam roofing and cladding on the cantilevered two-storey extension, modernising the property and enhancing its curb appeal.
Project Overview
The homeowners, Jake and Elfina, were initially drawn to the property for its picturesque views. "It was the view we fell in love with," they explained. "The house itself needed a lot of work, but we saw the potential to create a wonderful contemporary family home. Ensuring durability and low maintenance was a priority, especially given the coastal location."
Upon purchasing the property post-lockdown, they found the original three-bedroom house with its dated features, including painted timber cladding and a failing flat roof extension, in need of a fresh identity. Raum Architects, based in Mumbles, were commissioned to reimagine the house with a distinct style reflective of its era.
Architectural Approach
Architects Dan and Helen Belton detailed the approach: “Extending an already substantial property with a significant addition is always challenging. The key is to give the new structure its own unique character while visually linking it to the original house. We added a new first floor, increasing the floor area by approximately 45 sqm.”
The two-storey structure now features a combination of Catnic Urban standing seam roofing and cladding, Cotswold Limestone stone, Marziale brick, and Western Red Cedar timber cladding, creating a purposefully contrasting yet cohesive design.
Successful Collaboration
The main contractor, Swansea-based HJO Developments, collaborated closely with Raum Architects to achieve an award-winning finish. The team, led by directors Simon Orr and Christopher Jenkins, benefited from Catnic’s comprehensive training, ensuring a successful installation.
In a short timeframe, the team installed 137 sqm of the 514mm profile, ideal for the Gower area’s weather conditions. The design features a large duo-pitched roof with matching wall cladding, seamlessly integrating with the overall structure.
“The training was hugely beneficial, and the support from Catnic was first-class. The product is straightforward to install and provides a very contemporary finish.”
